Saltwater Aquariums, Tanks & Kits

If you’ve maintained a saltwater aquarium before, you know the joy and excitement it can bring to your home. And you also know that saltwater aquarium setup and maintenance requires careful attention. If you’re new to fishkeeping, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

  • Think about location first. Your saltwater tank should be out of direct sunlight, drafty doors, or air vents. Sudden changes in temperature can affect your fish. And having an outlet nearby is key.
  • Aquariums are heavier than you think! Each gallon of water in your tank will roughly equal 8 lbs. Ensure your floors are strong enough to hold the weight of a large tank, and that the surface is even.
  • Preparing the water is key. You will need to first add fresh water, a filtration system, and a dechlorinator. Then use a hydrometer while slowly adding salt.
  • Your saltwater tank will require heating and lighting systems.
  • You can always opt for a saltwater aquarium kit instead of DIY. This might be the best solution for a beginner, and you can personalize your system as you get more aquarium knowledge.
  • All sand and substrates and plants and decor should be rinsed before they’re added to your tank.
