Habitat Considerations for Your Hamster or Gerbil

There are a few things to consider when creating the perfect home for your small critter:

  • Climate and temperature requirements. Never place your hamster or gerbil habitat in direct sunlight. While gerbils and hamsters typically acclimate to normal household temperatures, room temperature should not exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Provide the largest habitat possible. Your small friend needs the right amount of room to play and exercise.
  • Co-mingling with other small pets. Gerbils should only be placed in same-sex pairs if raised together. Otherwise, house adult gerbils separately.—adult hamsters should always be housed separately. Never house either animal with different types of small pets.
  • Housing must-haves. Maintain 1-2” of fresh bedding at all times. Soiled bedding should be replaced at least once a week, or as often as necessary. Be sure to include other essentials like a food bowl and water bottle, hideaway, toys, and chews.

The best cage for a hamster has enough room (or more) for normal activity, is escape proof, and provides all the essentials needed to keep your furry friend happy.

A hamster cage should contain fresh bedding, food, nesting fluff, a water bottle and food dish, exercise wheel and/or tubes, hideaway, and toys. Consider one of our convenient hamster starter kits for everything you need in one place.

We recommend against keeping two hamsters in the same cage. Adult hamsters should always be housed separately.

We recommend keeping your hamster cage in a room without dramatic temperature fluctuations. Ideally, your hamster should be kept in a room with a stable temperature, not to exceed 80 degrees fahrenheit. Additionally, they should not be kept in direct sunlight or in a drafty space.
