Good water quality is an essential factor in maintaining new or established aquariums. Poor water quality stresses fish, which leaves them susceptible to disease and possibly death and a stable pH level is one of these components needed for maintaining a healthy environment. The pH scale measures pH levels from 1 to 14. 7 is the neutral point in the pH scale, where the water is neither acid nor alkaline. As the scale goes down, water becomes more acidic, and as the scale goes up, water becomes more alkaline.
Regulating pH can be accomplished by using certain substrates, conducting proper water changes as well as the use of pH buffers.
It depends on the type of aquarium and the species you are housing. For example, a safe pH for marine/saltwater is 8.2 to 8.4, whereas freshwater pH ranges from 6.8 for fish like goldfish to 7.0-7.5 for community freshwater aquatic life and cichlid/discus prefer a pH of 7.6 to 8.0.
While substrates like aragonite are able to help stabilize or raise pH, silicate sands should not affect pH in a tank.

what is the best way to control the ph in a discus tank?
My 5gal goldfish tank (for a 4 in goldfish) is currently at a really low pH (6.0-6.4). What is the ideal range for goldfish, what is the best way to alter the pH and how gradually does the change need to be.

Hi my little guy 16 lbs has a higher PH level, I use dip sticks occassionaly to monitor. I am aware it fluctuates. He does not drink enough water. I have started putting a little bit of chicken broth in a small bowl of water several times a day to get him to drink more water. His PH fluctuates 6.5 - 8. He eats a little bit of fruits, he loves water melon and apples. Could this be causing it? He only gets a little 2x a week. Can you recommend anything to bring down the PH? Last Vet trip 6.5
We are new to having aquariums, we really didn't realize so many things played a factor with the water. We currently have a 10 gallon tank but want to increase to a 29 gallon tank. We currently buy gallons of water but with the 29 gallon tank we really don't want to have to do that. We have well water with a salt filter. My levels from to tap was nitrate 10, nitrite 0, hardness 0, chlorine 0, alk 100, ph 7.. is my tap water safe even with the salt filter.
Hi, I just tested my betta tanks water & his ph is good sitting at 7.5. But my alkalinity & water hardness are both very high at 720 ppm (alkalinity) & 300 ppm (hardness). i’m just curious if i should be concerned since my ph is normal
