Highly recommend

I've been buying these small frozen rats for our 5 year old ball python for a few years now and have never had any complaints. Steve eats them quickly and has never rejected one. Some odd reviews here reporting fleas and urine both of which I've never seen in all the years I've been purchasing/thawing/feeding. I'll keep buying them. My preference is for the bag of 3 and it's always in stock at the local store.

Yes, I recommend this product.

I will never ever buy this brand, the rats were gross. I understand it is a rat and that a little bit of smell is fine. How this rats were covered in urine and they looked like they were killed in very weird ways. All of the rats looked like they were in pain. Inhumane sticky and overall gross. My snakes will honest them of course why should they eat that crap it is just bad!

NOT Accurate...

Paige

I get that these are supposed to be variable, but I don't have one single rat that is 45g in this bag. In fact, I only have ONE rat that is under 67g and its 49g... I also have 2 rats in here that are over 90g....one of which is 97g....These are not smalls. I can literally only attempt to use about 3 of the rats out of this 10 qty bag. Such a waste of money.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Paige, sorry for the inconvenience with the small rats you purchased. The rats included in each bag are variable and should fall within the range specs we have listed on the sizing guide. Unfortunately, something seems to have been missed. We would be happy to provide you with a replacement order to correct the problem. Bad Rat!!!

Debbie_H

I think this was a bad batch of rats. After thawing it, I tried to feed it to my snake and like sometimes, while he constricted the guts kinda popped out. Once he got the rat halfway down he regurgitated it and when I went to throw it away, it smelled rancid. The frozen rats always have a bad smell, but this one was well beyond the normal smell and smelled like it had been left out in the sun for days, rancid.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Questions

1 - 2 of 2 Questions

Are the rats frozen all together in one big clump or frozen in their own bag individually and put into the larger bag?

  1. All together. I was pretty put off when I first started ordering them, but I think that’s just what people have to deal with when buying in bulk.  The only way to get them individually bagged is to buy from the pet store. 3 Times the price, which is not even as Bad as never knowing if or when it’s in stock. Buying in huge nasty frozen clumps is the lesser of the 2 evils for me. Hope this helps.

What is the reason for the major size difference in the small rat? The large mouse is very small, the pup rat is a little bigger, then the small rat is sometimes 3 times larger than the pup rat. Am I the only person with this issue?

  1. I've compared between Petco's brand and online wholesale reptile feeder suppliers and the distinction is that Gourmet Rodent doesn't distinguish between weaned rats (35-49g) and small rats (50-89g). I've switched to Big Cheese Rodents and they come in packs of 20 (weaned) and 15 (small) for their smallest packaging: $33-39. The downside to this is that shipping is $29. The upside is that there is no guessing and more consistency with the quality of the frozen feeders.
