My 16 year old loves when I make his food!

Jenn M.

My boy gets very excited when he knows I am cooking just for him! I love cooking for my furbaby! I know he is get wholesome, real food! He has heart issues so what he eats is very important. My only complaint is that I have the worst time finding either Turkey Livers or Lamb Livers! (Beef & Chicken livers are abundant at any grocery store) I even called JFFD to see if I could substitute Chicken Livers for the Turkey Livers but, the rep was very adamant that the recipes should not be altered. I always have to drive an hour or more to get what I need. However, my boy is worth it!

Our Doodle Loves This Recipe!

We recently switched to Just Food for Dogs DIY recipes and our Sheepadoodle loves the Turkey blend! He has been eating a fresh food diet for over a year, but costs and concerns about ingredients led us to look for recipes we could make for him. This one is a win and the nutrient pack ensures he is getting the supplements he needs.

My dogs love it!

I have a 16 year old border collie, a seven year old Aussie, and a three year old Havanese. The border collie and Havanese often went through times where they seemed to lack appetite, and the Havanese also developed an itch. All of them love this food (full disclosure, the Aussie loves anything). The Havanese clears her bowl every time. Ours especially like the Venison and turkey based recipes.

Game Changer

My senior dog was diagnosed with EPI, multiple vets told me prescription kibble was the best thing for her. Her health was rapidly deteriorating, she couldn’t keep kibble down either end anymore and was so weak she couldn’t stand on her own anymore. I just figured it was the end of our time together. Decided to make the switch to JustFoodForDogs and my pup was instantly able to keep the food down. She’s been on this food for about two years now. She can walk a full mile now with no issues, and runs around playing with her 3 yr old sister. I really don’t think she’d still be around without this food. She’s 12 now and is going strong. Grateful for this product.

Every week I cook a batch of Turkey and Whole wheat macaroni recipe for my dog. She is so excited to eat every little bit and wants more. Having the right amount of nutrients makes it easy to cook my own dog food.

We are so disappointed that there is not a JFFD Kitchen in the Sacramento area since we were spoiled going to the West Hollywood kitchen when we lived in Pasadena. But, glad we that the mix allows us to make our own. It’s great that I can buy my own ground turkey and chop us carrots and broccoli for him. He’s a spoiled brat but we love him so much so it’s a labor of love.

Questions

1 - 9 of 9 Questions

Are the feeding guidelines in the DIY Cooking Guide based on per day or per meal?

  1. The directions are not clear. I have ended up feeding my 55 lb dog 1 1/2 cups twice daily. This keeps him at a good weight even with a few daily treats. He loves the food.

What is the 'natural calcium' made of in this product?

I want to get this to feed my dogs for a Thanksgiving as a fun treat. I already feed them the Russet Potato and Beef blend, so I don’t think changing their food for one meal will hurt. But! Can I freeze the nutrient blend to save it for future years?

I bought the turkey and whole wheat macaroni recipe which calls for fresh or frozen cranberries that I can't find anywhere this time of year. Is there a substitute I can use?

      1. I couldn’t find cranberries either. I found that blueberries worked well.

I already have several recipes for home cooked food for my 4 mo. old puppy that he likes. May I buy this powder and use it as my supplement for his vitamins, minerals and bone calcium? I also add probiotics and salmon oil to his recipe. Thanks,

      1. It isn’t recommended to use this blend, or any of the JFFD nutrient blends, for dogs under a year old without consulting a vet first.

Does it come with clear guidelines on how much to feed your pet according to its weight and activity per day? How long would a canister last me if I have 2 dogs one is 10lbs other is 15lbs? Both at good weight.

      1. My dogs are both 40 pounds so I feed them 2.5 cups each a day. It comes with a guideline on dog weight but not weight + activity. However - their website says to watch your dog’s weight in response to the food and adjust feeding amounts accordingly.

Can i get more specifics re ingredients (whole food) and amounts required per day. Do you break down percentages of protein-fat-carbs and can I do that. If so do you have a breakdown of the amount of supplement required. Thanks in advance

      1. If you go to the just food for dogs website, it gives you all the information. Recipes, ingredients, percentages of carb/protein/fat and a feeding guide. You can also visit select stores and they jffd agent can give you the same info.

Can this food be frozen after it is prepared? How long does it last in the refrigerator?

      1. We freeze it until the day before we are ready to serve. Package says that it can be kept in fridge for up to a week. We usually put a couple in the fridge a few days before to thaw.  I set one out on the counter an hour or so before serving and we usually also heat it in microwave for 20-40 seconds.  They love it!!

tI feed my 11 year old Shi-Zu canned food and dry kibbles once a day to which I would like to add a tsp. of your balamced nutrients. Is that a good idea? If so is 1 tsp enough? Thank you.

      1. No, not a good idea!! The JFFD supplements are intended to be added to a fresh cooked recipe using a protein(meat: beef, chicken, etc). The powder is NOT supposed to be added to canned food or kibble. Each "meat" recipe has its own supplement powder, and depending if you make a full, or half recipe, you use the recommended measurement of powder. Do not add this to your dogs canned food or kibble--you can possibly make your dog sick your pet by giving too much vitamins!
