Changed Recipe

Liza

I have been using this DIY recipe and nutrient mix for almost 2 years. It was great for my girl who has a sensitive stomach. Recently she began have GI issues (vomiting and diarrhea). After multiple vet visits and ruling out other causes it was the new formula of this fish and sweet potato recipe. The GI symptoms came back every time I reintroduced this food. They changed the recipe/nutrient mix and didn’t indicate anywhere on the package that they changed the recipe. On the search again for another food for my girl’s sensitive stomach.

Good product

By choosing organic ingredients (and replacing sunflower oil with pure and minimally processed sunflower seed butter), plus using wild-caught salmon and sardines for the fish, I am able to save on the cost, make sure everything is truly (although a home freeze drier is a substantial cost) fresh, and freeze dry half of the batch to have a truly healthy food (which tastes as good to me, as it does to my dog). Using only healthy (specialty) salt also enhances the flavors and goodness.

IBD Symptoms Gone

My 4 year old Boykin spaniel has suffered from IBD for her whole life. She never ate consistently and has dealt with monthly bouts of diarrhea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. After a particularly bad GI episode we decided to try the diy cod recipe. She has been eating every single meal since we switched (about two months) which hasn’t happened in her entire 4 years of life! She has had no GI issues or IBD flare ups and we couldn’t be more excited.

Too difficult to find the ingredient

I gave up and never used it. None of my local stores—Walmart, Harris Teeter, Wegman’s, Whole Foods—had all of the ingredients. I think they should find more common ingredients. It’s like they’re trying to make it difficult so we buy their prepackaged meals.

Waste of time and money

Muriel B.

I was excited to find something that could help my pets with their skin issues, and one with her weight issues. This was not my experience. Shipping is too expensive the product does noy go far for 6 dogs and their skin issues have no improvement. The chicken caused them to itch and scratch even more. The product is not worth the price or the time, I can just make food for my dogs on my own without all this nonsense. Two of mybdogs became so skinny that I had to switch them back to kibble; after reading the tiny print it says:". . . not meant as a meal replacement. . . " nice. Waste of time and money, horrible product. I could have used all that wasted money to purchase Cytopoint shots for my pups.

Easy to follow recipes and my pup loves it!

Easy to find ingredients and several ways of cooking it, whether on stove top, crock pot or instant pot. I just make a big batch and vacuum seal in mason jars and freeze u til teady to use! My pup definitely has more energy and a great looking coat!

Stuck with It

Stacy S.

I ordered 2 bags of the Fish & Sweet Potato nutrient pack before realizing one of my dogs cannot process russet potatoes. I would like to return the unopened bag, but they will not accept it unless I take it to the nearest JFFD retail store. I would have to fly or take a longer road trip to do so. I could understand not taking it back if it was a special formulation, but this is part of the standard inventory. I just find that frustrating. The team members I have spoken with have been very polite and professional.

At the moment I can

Lisa S.

At the moment I can only give 4 starts. Easy to follow instructions. Wiley loves the food, and me for being his personal chef, lol. So why only 4 stars? He was put on this for allergies, and is only now starting to be tapered off his meds ( steroids and antihistamines), and doing very well. If he continues to not show signs of allergies (chewing feet, smelly ears, drip), then it will become 5 stars for sure. :+1:

Questions

Can I mix the protein instead of using fish could I do chicken my dog can't eat beef lamb or rice

  1. Yes, you can use chicken. my dog was overweight, we started her on the fish, sweet potato, carrots, and green beans and the powdered supplement, we cook all her food ourselves at home. She lost 10 lbs. Now we give her the fish meal in AM, and we give her the chicken, sweet potato, green beans, carrots for dinner. just need to measure the amount for your dog's weight group.

Where is this product made and manufactured? And where are the ingredients sourced from? Is any part of this from China?

  1. None are made in China, they're all made in the usa. Just food for dogs are have 100% dried foods. In some locations you can see them make them from scratch.

Can you swap the sweet potato for russet potato? My dog has tons of allergies and hates sweet potato, but can only tolerate fish.

  1. The instructions state to follow the recipe exactly, but they have consults that you can do with a nutritionist if you go to their website, so I would check out that option.
