I have been using a hydrometer since I set up my tank 5 months ago. I had 3 fish die and could not figure out what was going on. In checking on what I need for an anemone I saw that they recommend a refractometer so I got this. I found that my hydrometer was off by like 5 points!!! No wonder my fish died and the others just did not act so great!! Everyone needs one of these and throw that little plastic thing away!!

This refractometer is far lighter than the much higher priced one it replaced, which had a hinge so rusty it finally broke. Do follow the directions-focus with the rotating endpiece, calibrate before every use with plain water, and wait 30 seconds after putting the sample in it. Someone gave it a poor rating because they thought it measured the solidity of water… hoping they were looking for a TDS meter. Otherwise I have concerns.

I bought this as a work around because my Hanna instruments salinity checker died. I was able to calibrate and accurately measure salinity for my saltwater and brackish aquariums with out any issues. I tested my water with my new Hanna meter after it was replaced under warranty and it was working +\- .001 on the specific gravity. Very pleased.

Very accurate! I had just a cheap fluval hydrometer and it was all over the place. The readings changed drastically testing the same water with the hydrometer. Purchased this refractometer and ive had no problem maintaining my specific gravity. Very simple to use and very easy to read. Just a reminder you will need distilled water to calibrate it first before using it.
